E+M Attends International Mass Timber Conference

E+M Partner Rafael Machado and Associate Principal Kris Morrison spent several days last week at the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland, Oregon.

The International Mass Timber Conference is the largest global gathering of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and other mass timber experts in the world.  There is a special focus on manufacturing and mid to high-rise design and construction.

E+M discussed design challenges with engineers that have successfully completed mass timber projects, talked through supply chain logistics with contractors and mass timber suppliers, and consulted with industry experts on the steps needed to make these projects more of a reality on the east coast.

E+M is now well versed in the intricacies of mass timber design and construction.   As more jurisdictions adopt the new 2021 International Building Code, that allows up to 18 stories of timber construction, E+M is poised and ready to cost effective structural solutions for this exciting new frontier in construction.

Cold Formed Steel Framing Gaining Traction In Multifamily Construction

Ellinwood + Machado has long been known for our expertise with concrete and wood structures, but did you know that E+M is also very accomplished when designing structural systems for load bearing cold formed steel framing!

EM has significant experience/expertise on several major cold formed steel projects throughout the US.  With several million square under our belt, we have successfully completed projects is the following cities among others :

Charleston, South Carolina – 10 West Edge , 55 Romney

Cincinnati, Ohio  – The Banks

Detroit, Michigan – Third & Grand

Nashville, Tennessee – Broadstone Gulch

Atlanta, Georgia –  Star Metal Residences

Sandy Springs, Georgia – Somerby of Sandy Springs ,

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Hotel Indigo

Cold formed steel, or light gauge steel, as it is sometimes known, is a non-combustible, lightweight, and strong construction method that is easy and fast to construct.    Cold formed steel is very popular in multi-family developments where code limits timber building’s height and combustibility requirements.  Cold formed steel can go up to 9 stories and doesn’t have the shrinkage issues that timber construction typically has.  Projects can be stick framed or more commonly, panels can manufactured off site and assembled with ease at the project location.
