E+M has been a proud sponsor of Canstruction since 2014. Canstruction is a charity and art exhibit event that features large structures completely made out of cans of food. At the end of each competition, all canned food is donated to local hunger relief and food bank organizations in Atlanta, GA. Each year, E+M has donated an estimate of 6,000 cans of food.
Through Canstruction, E+M is able to demonstrate our creativity as structural engineers while also giving back to those in need in our local community. The canned food donated in Canstruction has a direct impact on the individual lives that make up our community.
This year’s participating Canstruction members from E+M include Orbicio Alano, Luis Hasbun, and Tyler Young. The theme is “Behind the Mask”. E+M is portraying this theme by creating a structure with four theater masks. The two sad masks represent someone experiencing hunger and the two happy masks represent those feeling relief after being fed. The four masks stand 8 feet tall and are made up of 5,520 cans.
The 2015 Canstruction Campaign was “We CAN Think Globally and Act Locally”. E+M was honored to accept several awards from Canstruction for our structure both locally in Atlanta and internationally. Over 1,200 structures participated in the international professional competition. We received ‘1st Runner Up for Juror’s Favorite’ on the international level. Our collaborative team for this project included E+M’s Adam Carroll. At the local Atlanta level, E+M won the ‘Juror’s Favorite’ and ‘Most Cans’ Awards.
In 2014, the theme was “Teaching A Man to Fish”. We design and build our trial structures for Canstruction in our E+M Lab located in Atlanta.
