Modern church architecture addition and renovation project

First (Scots) Presbyterian Church Addition & Renovation

This is a 3-story addition for a downtown Charleston church. Included in the project was a renovation of the existing administration/classroom building. New facility includes a large meeting space, classrooms, administration spaces, and a kitchen.

This project was completed as 4SE, Inc., prior to joining EM Structural in 2021

AIA North Carolina Center for Architecture & Design

AIA North Carolina Center for Architecture & Design

This new 12,000 SF building is the headquarters for the AIA NC Chapter and acts as a contact point for government participation; a catalyst for public outreach; and a design education program to radiate throughout the state, provides public exposure for architects and their work, and serves as a source of pride for AIA North Carolina members and the entire state.

The building exhibits design excellence and represents the talent and aspirations of AIA North Carolina members. This facility boasts a spacious lobby, a multi-purpose room, a gallery on the first floor, and offices and meeting rooms on the 2nd and 3rd levels.

South Carolina Aquarium

South Carolina Aquarium

The South Carolina Aquarium is located in beautiful and historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina. With over 5,000 animals, their mission is to inspire conservation of the natural world by exhibiting and caring for animals, by excelling in education and research and by providing an exceptional visitor experience.

The South Carolina Aquarium is a 90,000 SF, three story building with a waterfront location on the Charleston Harbor.

The aquarium contains multiple concrete tanks of various sizes that were built on-site, including a 15,000-gallon Carolina Seas tank that houses a vast collection of colorful fish found around reef habitats off the coast. Gathering spaces include a lobby, retail shops, meeting rooms, a gallery, and numerous exhibit and administrative spaces.

structural system

NASA Measurement Systems Laboratory

Located at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA, the new 175,000 SF laboratory will accommodate approximately 245 staff members, students, and visitors.  The project will consolidate a number of Electronics, Chemistry, Laser, and Measurements laboratories currently located throughout the Langley campus into one state-of-the-art facility.  A one story wing of the structure will house the NASA High Intensity Radiated Field (HIRF) Laboratory.

The structural system consists of cast-in-place mild reinforced concrete flat plate floors spanning between cast-in-place concrete columns.  The structure will be supported by driven precast piles with cast-in-place concrete pile caps.  Lateral forces will be resisted by cast-in-place concrete shear walls.  The structural framing was designed to stringent user specified vibration criteria, including equipment requirements, and consideration of external excitations including ordinance detonation, aircraft takeoff and landing, and adjacent below-ground tunnels where hypersonic flight conditions are tested.

The design was completed in 2015 and construction is anticipated to be compete in 2018.
