Cold Formed Steel Framing Gaining Traction In Multifamily Construction

EM Structural Engineers has long been known for our expertise with concrete and wood structures, but did you know that E+M is also very accomplished when designing structural systems for load bearing cold formed steel framing!

EM Structural has significant experience/expertise on several major cold formed steel projects throughout the US.  With several million square under our belt, we have successfully completed projects is the following cities among others :

Charleston, South Carolina – 10 West Edge , 55 Romney

Cincinnati, Ohio  – The Banks

Detroit, Michigan – Third & Grand

Nashville, Tennessee – Broadstone Gulch

Atlanta, Georgia –  Star Metal Residences

Sandy Springs, Georgia – Somerby of Sandy Springs ,

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Hotel Indigo

Cold formed steel, or light-gauge steel, as it is sometimes known, is a non-combustible, lightweight, and strong construction method that is easy and fast to construct.    Cold formed steel is very popular in multi-family developments where code limits timber building’s height and combustibility requirements.  Cold formed steel can go up to 9 stories and doesn’t have the shrinkage issues that timber construction typically has.  Projects can be stick framed or more commonly, panels can manufactured off site and assembled with ease at the project location.

Check out this Soils Brightleaf time lapse video from our recently completed project in Durham, North Carolina!

Solis Brightleaf Time Lapse

Solis Brightleaf is and approximately 300,000 sq. foot, 194 unit  mixed use development adjacent to historic Brightleaf Square in Durham.  The building is a 5-story Type IIIA wood structure bearing on a 2-story Type IA concrete structure housing parking and amenity spaces.
