cold formed steel design

Cold Formed Steel Framing Gaining Traction In Multifamily Construction

EM Structural Engineers has long been known for our expertise with concrete and wood structures, but did you know that E+M is also very accomplished when designing structural systems for load bearing cold formed steel framing!

EM Structural has significant experience/expertise on several major cold formed steel projects throughout the US.  With several million square under our belt, we have successfully completed projects is the following cities among others :

Charleston, South Carolina – 10 West Edge , 55 Romney

Cincinnati, Ohio  – The Banks

Detroit, Michigan – Third & Grand

Nashville, Tennessee – Broadstone Gulch

Atlanta, Georgia –  Star Metal Residences

Sandy Springs, Georgia – Somerby of Sandy Springs ,

Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Hotel Indigo

Cold formed steel, or light-gauge steel, as it is sometimes known, is a non-combustible, lightweight, and strong construction method that is easy and fast to construct.    Cold formed steel is very popular in multi-family developments where code limits timber building’s height and combustibility requirements.  Cold formed steel can go up to 9 stories and doesn’t have the shrinkage issues that timber construction typically has.  Projects can be stick framed or more commonly, panels can manufactured off site and assembled with ease at the project location.

Check out a few examples of recent projects that E+M has done:

Check out this Soils Brightleaf time lapse video from our recently completed project in Durham, North Carolina!

Solis Brightleaf Time Lapse

Solis Brightleaf is and approximately 300,000 sq. foot, 194 unit  mixed use development adjacent to historic Brightleaf Square in Durham.  The building is a 5-story Type IIIA wood structure bearing on a 2-story Type IA concrete structure housing parking and amenity spaces.

The HUB Charlotte, NC Construction Update

Check out these pictures of the HUB South End construction from a recent site visit.

These pictures show the ongoing efforts to install the post tensioned and mild reinforcing of the podium level before concrete placement.   This concrete podium will will support 4 levels of timber framing.

The Hub South End is a multifamily mixed-use project is located along the South line light rail in Charlotte, North Carolina. It will consist of 265 residential units with retail, office, and town home space under the podium.

22 West Edge Charleston, SC Construction Update

Check out these pictures from a recent site visit to the 22 West Edge Construction site in Charleston, SC!

22 West Edge is an 8 story composite steel office building at the western side of the Charleston peninsula.  The ground floor is a cast in place concrete post tensioned concrete structural slab on grade.  The lateral support is achieved with buckling restrained braced frames.

EM Structural is a Proud Sponsor of the Paul Zia Distinguished Lecture Series

Earlier this week members of the EM Structural Raleigh office attended the Paul Zia Distinguished Lecture Series held annually at NC State University.   This years topic was the replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge with the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge across the Hudson River just north of New York City.

EM Structural is proud to be a sponsor for these lectures and is proud to help support the NC State University Civil Engineering Department, from which several of our employees are alumni.
